Voter turnout in the Vale of Glamorgan fell slightly in the general election that took place yesterday in comparison to that of 2007.

Out of those who were registered to vote in the constituency, 71.6% turned out to vote in 2019, which fell from the 72.6% turnout in the previous general election.

Meanwhile, Alun Cairns upped his majority in the area, despite stepping down as Secretary of state due to his alleged involvement in the sabotage of a rape trial earlier this year.

He has since thanked voters for their support. In a statement on social media he said: ''Thank you to everyone in the Vale of Glamorgan for restating their confidence in the Conservative Party and me in yesterday's general election.

''If you voted for me, thank you and I will do all I can to live up to your hopes and expectations. If you did not, gaining your confidence will be my priority.

''Thank you.''

Alun Cairns consolidated on his majority with a vote share of 49.8% (27,305), up 2.3% from 2017.

Labour's vote share fell by 0.1% decreasing their vote share to 43.3%.

The Green party, led by the Welsh party leader Anthony Slaughter, saw a significant increase in the vote share of 5.2%, whilst Gwlad Gwlad also saw an increase, albeit smaller, of 0.9%.

The Conservative party won a significant majority in last night's general election across the UK. Wales saw a few surprising shifts to conservative MP's and Plaid Cymru candidates.

Despite maintaining an overall majority in Wales, many candidates saw swings to opposition parties in their majorities.
