A graffiti spate in the early hours of Monday morning reportedly saw approximately half of the shops on Barry Island vandalised.

The Rockshop, Caesars Palace, Sofia's Souvenirs and O'Shea's were among those damaged.

CCTV images were shared on Facebook of two teenage girls graffitiing tags, profanities and their first names around the Island.

Marco Zeraschi explained that the girls' parents quickly contacted them and were "devastated".

"On my son's cameras we watched them write their names. After my daughter-in-law posted on Facebook, we had their full names in about half an hour. The parents rang up and they were devastated," he told Nub News.

"I can't understand what possesses people to go on a mini rampage like that. About 50% of the shops on Barry Island were hit.

"Business-owners take such pride of the Island itself, and they don't want visitors and the general public to see that. We're not turning into a New York subway station."

Becca Williamson, a worker at The Rockshop said: "On the shutters we had the word 'die', and the word 'meow' on the wall.

"We managed to get it all off. The council workers gave us a hand, but we had to take down one of our signs that was damaged.

"Some of the businesses have painted during lockdown, so that's why it stung a little bit more. But what needed to come off has.

"As long as they understand that they did wrong, that's all we care about. We don't want to see them get into any more trouble."

Marco said he "couldn't give the Council cleansing team enough credit".

"I've got to praise the council here, the cleansing team were straight on it and took as much as they could off," he said. They took away about 90% of it.

"We're putting the message out there that we're not standing for this on Barry Island.

"We are a family resort run by families. We've gone through a lot being shut down in the pandemic."

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "Officers were made aware that numerous properties on Barry Island were sprayed with graffiti at the weekend.

"Two local girls aged 15 and 14 have since attended Barry Police Station with their parents to discuss the incident.

"They stated that they found the spray cans and that they were sorry for what they did.

"Officers will be visiting vendors on Barry Island to establish exactly how many victims there have been and how they would like the matter to be progressed."
