A primary school in Barry has received a £1,000 grant to help improve its outdoor facilities.

Oak Field Primary School, on Amroth Court, has been handed the cash prize from Persimmon Homes East Wales as part of the housebuilder's re-launched Building Futures campaign, which runs until August.

Building Futures will deliver more than £1m to good causes this year.

Kelly Bladon, a teacher at Oak Field Primary School, said: "Our aim is to provide an engaging, innovative 21st Century curriculum that is led by children's interests and provides them with the skills and experiences to become confident lifelong learners.

"This tremendous funding from Persimmon will enable us to develop our school's outdoor areas.

"It will allow us to buy water butts, raised beds and compost to create a vegetable patch to benefit not only our children but also the wider community.

"It's brilliant to see a company like Persimmon getting involved in the local community in this way."

Building Futures aims to support community groups working with under-18s across three categories – education & arts, health and sport.

A total of 128 grants of £1,000 will be awarded across Persimmon's 32 regional businesses to improve local facilities and the delivery of vital community projects.

Three initiatives will go on to win £100,000 each through a national online public vote. The winners will be named at a gala dinner for finalists in November.

In each sector – education & arts, health and sport – as well as the £100,000 first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize, while a further 87 shortlisted projects will each receive £5,000.

Victoria Williams, sales director at Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: "We're thrilled to be able to support Oak Field Primary School with this funding.

"It's great to see the school trying to maximise its resources and space for the benefit of its children. I'm sure the pupils will love learning in an outdoor environment.

"Building Futures is all about helping young people and youth groups in our area. We're accepting entries until mid-August so we'd urge more people to apply by visiting www.persimmonhomes.com/charity."

Persimmon currently has a small number of one-bedroom apartments left at its Haven Point development in Barry. For more information, visit www.persimmonhomes.com or call 01446 502 409 055.
