Police Officers Save Bus Driver From Heart Attack in Barry
A bus driver from Bridgend suffering a heart attack in Barry was saved by the quick-thinking actions of South Wales Police officers.
Road policing officer PC Westall was patrolling the town when he was flagged down by a member of the public in Princes Street.
A bus driver had pulled over complaining of chest pains and was possibly having a heart attack.
PC Westall was joined by response colleagues PC Roberts and PC Frost equipped with a defibrillator from outside Barry Police Station.
While they waited for an ambulance on Porthkerry Road, they managed to get the driver safely to seating on his bus but he collapsed onto the floor.
They used the defib and thankfully he regained consciousness and immediately started breathing again.
Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust arrived and confirmed that the 51-year-old from Bridgend was suffering a very large heart attack.
They stated the use of the defibrillator had restarted his heart and ultimately saved his life.
He was taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where he underwent surgery, following the incident at around 3 pm on Friday, April 3.
Praising his officers, Chief Inspector Tony Williams, said: "The officers quick thinking and the defibrillator have ultimately saved this gentleman's life.
"Despite the current climate, our officers remain on the front line, responding to spontaneous incidents, serving communities and doing their very best to keep everyone safe.
"It is pleasing to know we have officers like Pc Westall, Roberts and Frost among our ranks.
"Without their calm and quick-thinking actions, professionalism and bravery, the outcome for the bus driver man and his loved ones could have been very different.
"I am very proud of their actions and we wish the gentleman a full and speedy recovery."
