Residents from Barry have shown their gratitude for Waste Removal council staff who remain in work to deliver the services on which they rely.

While most staff are now working from home and Council offices are closed, a number of frontline employees continue to operate in much the same way as before to keep the County moving.

They include teachers, social care workers as well as members of the waste team.

And residents have found a novel way to demonstrate their appreciation for the latter group – by leaving messages of support on recycling bags and caddies.

Notes reading 'Thank You' were attached to waste containers as crews went about their rounds this week, while a large number of similar messages poured in on social media.

The Barry Waterfront COVID-19 Community Support Facebook group made a particular effort, with a host of notes on display in the area.

It is a show of solidarity that went down very well with the loaders and drivers themselves.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: ''I'd like to thank Vale of Glamorgan residents for their touching gestures of support at what is clearly a difficult time for everyone.

"While many of us are now largely housebound, a significant number of Council staff still have to go out to work to deliver essential services.

"They deserve every credit and I know they have been as heartened by these messages of goodwill as I am.

"During this testing period, we must all stick together and gestures such as this really demonstrate that unity."
