The Small Space will be streaming a virtual live jazz event featuring the James Chadwick Trio.

The event will be streamed from YouTube on Friday 12 March at 8pm, with tickets costing £5 per household.

The Small Space is the UK's smallest theatre, cinema and magic theatre. It started doing live jazz in 2018 when the venue opened and managed to fit one live event in before the pandemic hit in 2020.

James Chadwick, guitarist in the James Chadwick Trio, told Nub News that he was looking forward to the event.

"It's been a while since we've done a gig due to the pandemic, so it's safe to say that the three of us are excited," he said.

"We've got some new material that we've been looking at and we're looking forward to playing some tunes on Friday."

The material is from the Great American Songbook, featuring music from Cole Porter and Victor Young, as well as some originals from the band.

"Hopefully it will set everyone in the right mood for a Friday evening," Mr Chadwick said.

Jasper Blakeley, owner of The Small Space and resident magician, told Nub News that this is the venue's second time hosting a live-streamed jazz event and that he hopes to continue them in the future.

"We've got no idea when we'll really be open. That's the funny thing about having a place called the Small Space – everyone loves the intimacy, but it's totally anti-Covid," Mr Blakeley told Nub News.

"It is what it is, and we're just trying to adapt. The only concern is that there's so much free content out there. There are so many world-class artists who have been giving their content for free for over a year now."

Mr Blakeley added that the ethos towards paying for entertainment has been different during the pandemic.

"Whereas someone would pay £100 to have a ticket to go to a huge arena with 70,000 people to watch a tiny stick figure on stage, they do think twice about paying £5-10 to watch a stream of a local band performing locally," he said.

"It's a very different mind-set, especially if you consider that you pay £5.99 and get Netflix for a month."

The venue has been shut for almost a year since the UK first went into lockdown last March.

"Trying to get the streaming stuff sorted has been a challenge. But I've had government support to make sure that the venue will survive and come out the other side. In that respect, I'm lucky that the bricks and mortar venues have been supported," Mr Blakeley said.

"I know that so many of my other fellow artists have found it hard – so many of them have fallen through the cracks that Rishi Sunak has not filled.

"I'm mainly talking about people who are self-employed and pay themselves in dividends and therefore accept minimum wage. Therefore, when it comes to their payments, they get very little."

Mr Blakeley said that the Vale of Glamorgan and Barry Council, as well as the Welsh Government and Arts Council Wales, had been "excellent" and that he feels fortunate to have a bricks and mortar arts business.

The James Chadwick Trio will be performing on the live stream from 8pm on Friday 12 March.
