The German discount supermarket and retailer Lidl have announced their desire to open a second store in Barry.

They have released a list of potential site locations to help them reach their goal of opening 1,000 branches nationwide. There are currently 860 Lidl supermarkets in the UK, including one in Pencoedtre Village.

The list includes 38 potential locations in South-Mid Wales. Among them are four towns in the Vale of Glamorgan: Barry, Penarth, Cowbridge and Llantwit Major.

This forms part of Lidl's £1.3bn investment plans for 2021 and 2022. The chain intend to open 51 new stores this year, creating 2,000 new jobs.

The announcement comes just a week after rival discounter Aldi published a similar list which also included Barry.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB said: "We are calling on developers and landlords up and down the country to help find potential sites for us to build Lidl stores, which demonstrates the continued ambition we have to further expand our store portfolio across the nation. Despite the challenges of the past year, we still managed to meet our ambitious target of opening, on average, one new store per week across Great Britain.

"We are looking forward to opening more stores throughout the country and welcoming new colleagues in the coming months and years, so that more communities can access high quality food at the lowest prices on the market."

Potential sites must have easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow. They will be over 1.5 acres and situated either in or on the edge of a town centre, or in a retail park.
