Landmark trails unveiled to celebrate Community History Month

By Ellyn Wright 17th May 2021

To celebrate Community History Month in May, the Vale of Glamorgan Council has launched three community history trails.

The trails start at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, Pencoedtre High School and Whitmore High School.

Ideas have been submitted by the local community and each point on the trail celebrates an important historical event, landmark, or significant figure in Barry.

Pencoedtre High School Route starts at the school and includes stops such as Jenner Park Stadium, Holton Road, Barry Docks Office and the Waterfront. The route is 4 miles long and should take around one and a half hours to complete.

The second trail, starting at Whitmore High School and ending at Whitmore Bay is 5.5 miles long and should take around two hours to complete. Sites include Barry Castle, Porthkerry Park and St Baruc's Chapel.

Finally, the trail from Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg to High Street follows a route along Buttrills Field, Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery and MEMO Arts Centre. This trail is 3.1 miles long and should take around one hour to complete.

Take a leisurely walk along one or challenge yourself by completing all three.
