The Vale of Glamorgan's new "source-separated recycling system" is being introduced to Barry from the week beginning Monday, October 19.

The new containers are to be used alongside existing blue bags, green food waste caddies and green garden waste bags.

Anyone who has not received one of the new receptacles can order them from the Council website, where fresh supplies of the other bags can also be requested and there is a full list of what can and cannot be recycled.

The new regime will currently not extend to flats and apartment buildings with communal bin stores, though there are plans to do so later in the year.

However, residents living in flats who currently place their waste and recycling at the kerbside are included in the changes.

Already operating in other areas of the Vale, the new system requires residents to sort certain elements of their recycling into individual containers.

This means more of the material collected can be recycled, reducing the detrimental impact of domestic waste on the natural environment, and is more cost-effective.

The new vehicles collecting recycling have separate compartments for the different materials and collection crews place recycling directly into the correct compartments.

Crews then fold bags and place them inside the grey caddy on the kerbside outside a resident's home and the separated dry recycling is taken to a processing facility in Cowbridge.

Households are encouraged to place out no more than two black bags of non-recyclable waste a fortnight, but up to four will be accepted for a temporary period.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood services and Transport, said: "We will shortly embark on the next stage of the Council's recycling development programme following its successful launch in the other parts of the Vale last year. This will require residents in Barry to separate recycling into individual bags for collection at the kerbside.

"The new arrangement, which will begin on October 19, involves placing cardboard in an orange bag, paper in a white bag, glass in a grey plastic caddy and plastic and tins in existing blue bags. Black bag waste, green waste and kitchen waste will continue to be collected in the same way, using the same containers.

"Separating waste in this way means a greater proportion of the material can be recycled and so is a more efficient system. This will then be sold to UK markets that we source ourselves."
