Award-winning Barry headteacher & changemaker aims to inspire community changemakers across Wales and beyond
Award-winning Barry change-maker, Janet Hayward OBE, will be inspiring anyone with an interest in creating a better future for Wales and other communities in a special showcase online event, 'Tummler School', at noon on Friday, July 30th.
Janet, a World top 50 headteacher and a recent winner of the Times Education Supplement (TES) 'Community and Collaboration' award, will be sharing her experiences and lessons on how schools can be at the heart of transforming their communities to create better futures for children, their families and neighbourhoods.
She will be spotlighting her latest efforts, leading a team to deliver the Big Bocs Bwyd project which has inspired changes in Barry and across South Wales to tackle food waste and encourage better food choices.
The TES judges praised how: "The staff have worked tirelessly to confront poverty and ensure that pupils, their families and the wider community have been supported during the pandemic".
The project began at Cadoxton Primary, Barry, and with the support of the Welsh Government, expanded to ten schools across South Wales with aspirations to extend across Wales and be an inspiring model for schools around the globe.
Janet was brought up in Pontlliw near Swansea and attended the University of Wales. Her roles have included chairing the National Digital Learning Council for Wales and she is now the Executive Headteacher of Oak Field Primary in Barry along with Cadoxton Primary, with both schools serving areas of disadvantage.
'Tummler School' is a free monthly online event showcasing leading change activists. Organised by new Cardiff-based social enterprise Grow Social Capital, it explores what motivates outstanding change activists, and what lessons they can share and inspire among others.
Tummler is a Yiddish word for people who are hired to get a party going, which is how Grow Social Capital regards community changemaking.
Previous speakers include Sophie Howe, Wales' Future Generations Commissioner, Peter Davies, Chair of WCVA, Alex Hillman a pioneering changemaker from Philadelphia, and Julie Lee, the first female rugby league referee in Great Britain and Australia.
Andy Green, Director at Grow Social Capital said: "Janet is an inspiring driving force for enabling others to come together to tackle the big challenges our communities face. Anyone who cares about creating a better future for Wales needs to meet Janet and hear the inspiring stories of the change she is helping to nurture".
Tummler School is sponsored by leading Welsh organisations working to support positive social change, including Banc Cambria, doopoll, IndyCube and Working Word.
