The family of an elderly man injured during a road traffic collision on Gladstone Bridge last Monday [19 April] have expressed their gratitude to a group of girls who helped him.

David Jenkins, 77, was riding on the bus at approximately 5pm when the driver performed an emergency stop to try and avoid hitting a 13-year-old cyclist.

Both were taken to hospital: the mother of the teenage boy previously told Nub News her son was now "at home and doing okay", with a walking boot on his foot for his injury.

Mr Jenkins fell backwards and suffered a cut to the top of his head that required nine stitches.

"I went backwards and hit my head," said Mr Jenkins, who had his stiches removed yesterday.

"I shouldn't have got up, but the girls there had a couple of prams.

"I was going to get off the bus to help them out with the prams.

"They were more than helpful at the time, and since then they've brought me presents to my flat, and a get-well card," he said.

His daughter Sharon Palmer appealed on social media to find the girls, to "to thank them personally for their help and kindness shown to dad on Monday and again on Tuesday when they visited his home".

Since connecting with Cait Lewis, Nicola Edmunds, Victoria Beer and Chloe Wallace to thank them for their efforts, Sharon is arranging to give them a gift.

Their caring actions have received praise on Sharon's Facebook post: "If I ever have the misfortune to fall, I hope there are people as kind as you around" read one comment.
