The Vale of Glamorgan Council's day service, New Horizons, recently benefitted from a generous donation presented by Barry's Rising Sun Kyokushin Karate Club.

At the club's annual tournament, 20 children took to the dojo to showcase their fighting skills.

Points were awarded for demonstrating the technical aspects of Kyokushin, as well as outstanding performance and contact.

The youngsters also raised an impressive £110.00 from the event, which was later donated to the Hen Goleg League of Friends Charity for New Horizons Day Service, also in Barry.

New Horizons Day Service offers a day service for Vale residents living with a permanent or substantial physical disability.

The service aims to enhance people's well-being by supporting their health, social life and independence, as well as maintaining and developing their skills.

The service relies on a team of highly dedicated and experienced staff and provides a range of therapeutic and creative activities.

The centre is equipped with a specialist gym and exercise classes and offers communal activities such as woodworking, crafts and music.

They also provide personal care, advocacy, support for communication, emotional support and respite for carers.

Lance Carver, Director of Social Services said: "It's inspiring to see such a group of compassionate and conscientious youngsters – we're truly grateful for their donation.

"New Horizons Day Centre provides a range of activities for its service users, one of these being specialist exercise classes. Contributions such as these can help ensure that disabled people have access to specialist exercise equipment."
