High Street Pharmacy, in Barry, has announced that they will be providing a service to help treat customers sore throats without residents needing to visit the GP.

Announcing their new service on social media, they said: ''We have a great new NHS service to treat sore throats.

''We will assess, check temperatures, and if applicable take a throat swab to check for the presence of Strep A bacteria.

''If the swab is positive we will then issue a course of Antibiotics without the need to visit your GP surgery.''

The service is available for anyone over the age of 6.

Normally, there is no appointment needed but due to the new nature of the service, only one of the pharmacists is currently trained. Customers should check that they are available before visiting.

With strains on the NHS reaching breaking point across the country, new approaches like this will be welcomed by the community and health board.

High Street Pharmacy has always been on top of their game when looking for ways to innovate their services.

They also provide an easy-to-use app service, a click and deliver prescription service and many more inventive ideas.

The pharmacy is an independent, family-run business which has served the patients of Barry since 1888.

On their website they state: ''Our main aim is to look after the health and wellbeing of all our patients.

''Our friendly, dedicated, healthcare team offer all our patients that personal touch, which enables us to really get to know you and offer you exactly what you need.

''We can offer a complete Repeat Prescription package, from storing your repeat prescriptions securely, ordering them from the surgery, collecting from the surgery 48 hours later, and we can also deliver directly to your door.''
