Work will shortly begin on a development that will provide 23 new council houses at Hayes Road in Barry.

Consisting of 19 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom properties, these homes are being constructed by Pegasus Developments Ltd on a brownfield site near the Atlantic Trading Estate.

According to details from the Vale council's planning committee , each dwelling will include a private rear garden, the smallest of which would be 55m² for a two-bedroom property.

The new houses will be directly accessible from Hayes Road, which would lead onto an internal road and a parking area with 34 spaces.

They will boost the council's housing stock and help meet considerable demand for accommodation of this type: Barry was one of the areas most in need of affordable housing in the Vale according to a local housing market assessment .

The Vale of Glamorgan Council's Homes4U waiting list has 547 applications for housing in the Castleland ward, where these new houses will be built.

Barry Town Council were consulted during the decision period, and objected twice to the development, saying even with amendments the plans were "laudable" but "premature" as they appeared to conflict with the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Local Development Plan proposals for Barry.

Barry Nub News is awaiting comment from Barry Town Council on this matter.

This announcement comes just as work on another Council housing development at Llys Llechwedd Jenner is completed, a £3.5 million project that provided 28-new purpose-built homes.

A scheme to construct 11 new homes at Holm View in Barry, four of which are adapted bungalows specially designed to meet the needs of a disabled family member, is also nearing completion.

"The need for Council housing is increasing so it's vital we provide for that by delivering top quality properties," said Cllr Margaret Wilkinson, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Building Services.

"These homes and being constructed to the highest specification and will provide comfortable modern places for families to live.

"This is the latest in a serious of developments designed to boost our social housing stock and cater for the needs of our residents."
