Work On Community Building At Barry Cemetery Approach Completed
Construction of a new community building has been completed in the latest stage of redevelopment work at Cemetery Approach, jointly funded by Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Since 2015, the two Councils have been working in partnership to improve the previously derelict site.
Cemetery Approach Gardens were opened in 2017 following work to transform the area into an accessible open space for the community to enjoy by introducing new landscaping, fencing, seating, planting and paving.
And now a building that includes a multipurpose space, kitchen area, toilets and room for storage has been added to the site.
Many challenges have been overcome to arrive at this point, including a total rebuild following arson attacks and difficulties posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Built by Willis Construction Limited, the hall is set in beautifully landscaped gardens and will be equipped with tables and chairs, a large screen, Wi-fi access and on-street parking.
Barry Town Mayor, Margaret Wilkinson, said: "It is with great pleasure that Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council can now announce the completion of the new Community Building at Cemetery Approach, a key asset built for the community and for our future generations to enjoy.
"This building is the icing on the cake, sitting adjacent to the beautiful park already in place."
The Town Council will be guardians of this asset for the people of Barry as the Vale Council is in the process of transferring ownership of the building and gardens on a long-term lease.
When safe to do so, the Town Mayor and partners will be hosting an official open day so the public can see these facilities.
The hall will be available to hire birthday parties, wakes, family gatherings, meetings, events, training and local community group meetings from September, subject to Covid-19 regulations. To register interest in a tentative booking, contact [email protected]
Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: "We have worked in partnership with Barry Town Council over a number of years to transform what was a dilapidated, rundown area into something the local community could enjoy and be proud of.
"The latest stage of that plan involved building a facility containing amenities and storage space, which we hope will be of further benefit to those that use the area."
