Why is a giant pink unicorn walking around Barry?

Barry residents might be surprised to know that unicorns really do exist… At least inflatable fundraising ones do.

Genine Taylor, owner of Barry Buck Bar and the Ocean Lounge, has caused a stir this past week by traversing the streets dressed in a big pink unicorn suit, complete with a rainbow mane and tail.

With her daughter Savannah coming along to spot any big dips or bumps in her path, Genine has set out to walk 11,000 steps every day throughout March, to raise money for Cancer Research.

"Every year we do a Christmas fundraiser, but obviously that didn't happen in December," said Genine.

"I saw challenges on Facebook about walking 10,000 steps or even 11,000 every day. But I thought it wouldn't really get noticed.

"Then I saw this unicorn costume, and I showed it to my granddaughter, who loved it!

"We call her Rainbow Rona!" she said.

Since starting the fundraiser, Genine has raised £1,117 of her £2,000 goal.

"We've had an amazing response, not just online but out on the street as well," said Genine.

"People stop to say 'good morning' or shout encouragement from their cars."

Genine explained she devised a circular route from her home that reaches the 11,000 target, and by 31 March will have completed an awesome 341,000 steps.

"Working at a bar, I'm used to being on my feet all day," she said.

"The suit has these mini hair dryer things to inflate it, and they blow cold air.

"So the first day I went out in a hoodie and I was all layered up.

"I soon learnt the hard way that all I needed was a t-shirt and a pair of leggings!"
