Barry Island Pleasure Park owner Henry Danter says they are busy dismantling structures ready for the next season.

Mr Danter bought Barry Island Pleasure Park back in 2015, beginning a £20 million redevelopment of the amusement park.

Two tin roof buildings that were used to store old rides are currently being demolished.

"We're doing refurbishment for the current season, and we've got lots of new rides coming in," said Mr Danter.

"There were one or two old buildings that were partly demolished five or six years, and with the wind and weather, we've taken the rest down because it's unsafe.

"Where it was an eyesore, we're taking it away.

"It's a work in progress at the moment, but for the coming season it will hopefully look bigger, better and brighter than ever," he said.

Speaking on the effects of the pandemic, Mr Danter said he was keen to open for Easter but that public health is the priority.

"I'd like to open in March, but it might be April or even May," he said.

"We've got to just be patient. We're losing revenue, but we need to make the park a better place. But health comes first.

"This is when we'd do this kind of work anyway, during the winter time.

"I like to think we would open for Easter, because it's very costly doing this work. We have a lot of rides on order, it will be full when we do open."

The Birmingham-born businessman has big hopes for the future as he reflected on progress so far.

"Six years ago, it was a derelict park. It was the worst park in the country, including Scotland and Northern Ireland," said Mr Danter.

""It was unwanted and unloved. We've spent five years getting it together.

"Coronavirus has sort of put has back a little bit, but it's still come a long way.

"The show must go on. We must show people that Barry is the place to be and the place to be seen.

"It's got to be where memories are made. Barry has got to be the best Wales."
