Major supermarkets and retailers in Barry will be held to stricter standards of Covid safety, as the Welsh Government is now putting into law measures which are currently set out as guidance.

All retailers will now legally need:

• To have signs visible to help people keep their distance and make their way around the store
• Sanitiser available for hands and trolleys
• Systems in place to limit the number of people who can be in store at any one time

At a press conferenced today Mr Drakeford said it was the responsibility of owners and managers to enforce these measures. He said many retailers are already operating at these high standards, but this will raise the bar to make sure all are. The Welsh Government will also make it a legal requirement for all businesses with more than five employees to carry out a Covid risk assessment. All businesses will need to re-run their risk assessments to take account of the new strain of coronavirus. These risk assessments will cover:

• Ventilation
• 2m distancing
• PPE and face coverings
• Supporting people to work from home

"We have to make sure the hard work of the many is not undermined by the recklessness of the few," said Mr Drakeford. "This week we are beginning to see signs of improvement across most parts of Wales. "But we know just how quickly the situation can change and how quickly cases of coronavirus can spread, if we let our guard down."
