WATCH: Barry's tiny forest project features on national television

Barry was featured in ITV Wales news programme last night as the tiny forest was planted in Pencoedtre play park.

The project, organised by Keep Wales Tidy, saw volunteers working in marked out portions of land to maintain social distancing as they collectively planted 1000 trees and laid a layer of straw mulch to supress weeds.

The trees will help attract wildlife, improve air quality, remove harmful greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and help reduce localised flooding.

ITV Wales reporter Mike Griffiths asked a volunteer about being able to walk past say 'I did that'.

"Or my grandkids will, which is more important. What they think we've left them," he responded.

Tom Ashmore, Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer, described the thick density of the forest as about three trees per square metre.

"The idea is that the trees will end up supporting each other under the ground," he told ITV Wales.

"Within the next couple of years we're going to see these trees double in size and the soil has been aerated so they should pop up quite quickly."

Pam Bacon, Regional Manager at Keep Wales Tidy, said that the tiny forests were a well-proven method that can support up to 500 different plants and animal species.

She hoped that it could be used as an outdoor classroom, a meeting place and community space to enjoy.
