Students at the Vale Learning Centre, operated by the Vale of Glamorgan Council at Barry Library, were recently presented with their Essential Skills and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) certificates at a presentation event hosted at Art Central Gallery.

Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration attended the event.

"The Vale Learning Centre provides a valuable opportunity for adults of any age or background to improve their English and Maths skills or learn English as a second language," she said.

"All learners attend part-time courses and work hard to fit their studies around work and family commitments.

"I know that the Centre team and I are extremely proud of their achievements and wish them the best of luck with their next steps in life and learning."

The presentation included Trinity ESOL Skills for Life Certificates in three categories: Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing.

These certificates help learners make a full and active contribution to British society and can support them in gaining full citizenship.

Also receiving certificates were English and Maths students who have achieved City & Guilds Essential Skills Wales awards up to Level 2.

These qualifications provide students with key language and numerical skills for living and working.

Many pupils also report a general boost in confidence, self-esteem, health and wellbeing as a result of completing the awards.

The Vale Learning Centre works in close partnership with Cardiff & Vale College who provide funding and enrolment for these courses.

It is supported by a full range of daytime and evening classes, a committed and skilled teaching team, crèche sessions and an accessible venue in purpose-built accommodation on Barry Library's first floor.

Students and tutors have full access to the excellent resources provided in the library.
