Vale Council Reminds Licensed Barry Island Businesses to Act Responsibly

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has written to businesses selling alcohol around Barry Island reminding them of their role in the continuing success of the family-focused resort.

With restrictions relating to the hospitality sector set to be relaxed from Monday, licensed premises will be allowed to sell alcohol for consumption in their own outdoor spaces.

Previously, some had been operating uncontrolled take-away services, which may have contributed to examples of anti-social behaviour and a lack of social distancing around the Island resort.

Ahead of the latest measures to ease lockdown, Council Leader Neil Moore and Managing Director Rob Thomas have issued a letter to pubs, cafes and restaurants.

These businesses have been warned that there will be consequences if they do not operate responsibly.

Barry Island is subject to a Public Space Protection Order meaning it is a criminal offence to consume alcohol in public spaces at the resort.

Police and Council Enforcement Officers can confiscate alcohol and issue a Fixed Penalty Notice if this order is not being properly observed.

And businesses may also face enforcement action if alcohol being consumed in restricted areas was purchased from them.

Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: "This has been a difficult period for many businesses, particularly those in the hospitality sector, and I welcome the fact many can soon begin trading again, albeit in a limited capacity.

"However, the sale of alcohol must be carried out respectfully and carefully. Consideration must be given to the effect on visiting families, children and the general public, especially on and around Barry Island, which has strict controls over alcohol consumption.

"Recent scenes of anti-social behaviour and group gatherings are not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

"We have worked hard in recent years to regenerate the Island and re-establish it as one of Wales' premier seaside resorts. I will not have that reputation ruined and other visitors' experience spoiled by the actions of an inconsiderate minority or the irresponsible businesses that facilitate such behaviour.

"The Police and our Enforcement Officers can and will take action against those consuming alcohol where they should not be on the Island and against the outlets that have supplied it."
