Resident's walking tours of Barry draw worldwide praise

For many us a daily walk has been a lifeline during lockdown: an hour or so outdoors has immense benefits for our mental and physical health.

One Barry resident has taken this a step further, allowing people across the world to enjoy a walk around our town.

Craig Lambert started doing video tours via Facetime with his mother-in-law.

"My mother-in-law lives up in Chester, but before the pandemic she would regularly come down maybe twice a month. She was really missing Barry Island and the beaches," he explained.

"So, I was doing little Facetime videos with her, and I thought I could expand these into something longer.

"I'd seen a couple of similar things on YouTube and I found them really relaxing and soothing. So, I thought that's something I could do."

Filmed on a Go-Pro camera using a wide lens, Craig's videos take the viewer on a virtual tour of familiar locations around the Vale, including the promenade, the Knap, Penarth Pier and Marina.

Craig aims to keep the videos as natural as possible, allowing for an immersive experience.

"I haven't put any music or pizzazz over the top of the videos and that's why I'm not talking, which is unusual for me, I find that the hardest part," said Craig.

"I just wanted to sort of capture the sounds of the sounds of the world: the ocean, the birds, the wind and the traffic."

Though his videos come across calm and casual, Craig actually plans many aspects of them from the location, exact route, and timing.

"I'm taking my time with it, walking slowly and trying to film as much of the surroundings as possible," said Craig.

"I want people to feel as though they're doing the walk themselves.

"I thought it would be good for people's mental health if they can't get out themselves, to have a relaxing walk."

Feedback on the videos has come from across the globe, with people messaging Craig from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and Taiwan.

"I've had lots of lovely messages sent to me from people on YouTube," he said.

"A couple of people have said they lived in Barry many years ago and they used to go and feed the swans.

"Some say it's interesting to see how much Barry Island has changed. It's all been very positive.

"There is a little secret too, that nobody's noticed yet apart from my close family members.

"There's a hidden elf in every video. My mother-in-law does arts and crafts and she knitted it for me. It's green with a pointy hat, and he's in every one," he said.

Even though restrictions have eased, making all Wales residents able to travel to Barry, Craig has no plans to stop anytime soon.

"I'm enjoying it. I'm not a video expert. I'm just a bloke with a camera that I normally use on holidays.

"I'm just try to encourage some people back to Barry after lockdown, to buy a coffee, enjoy the beach and have a bag of chips," he said.
