Police in Barry are asking local parents for their support in helping them to tackle underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

It comes after recent reports of anti-social behaviour involving large groups of youths gathering at Maslin Park, Plymouth Road. Concerns have been raised about underage drinking and drug taking at the park.

Officers are working with the Safer Vale Partnership to combat these issues.

The area is covered by a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which prohibits anyone from drinking within the zone. PSPOs are in place to combat persistent anti-social behaviour in public spaces.

These orders allow the council and police to work jointly to tackle community problems such as alcohol, dog fouling, and littering.

Any person not complying with a direction given by a designated officer commits a criminal offence and can be dealt with by way of fixed penalty notice, court summons or even arrest if necessary.

Barry Community Safety Partnership officers along with the Barry Neighbourhood Policing teams, will be working with the Safer Vale Partnership, taking a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour in the park.

Targeted high visibility patrols will continue to be carried out in the area in order to prevent such behaviour and reassure the community.

Local Policing Inspector for Barry, Mark Henderson, said: "Tackling anti-social behaviour is a key priority for us and I would like those involved in such activity to know there is no place for it in Barry.

''This kind of behaviour can be intimidating for local residents- especially the elderly and vulnerable.

"We are keen to get the message out to parents to help us by making sure they know where their teenagers are when they are out and about in the evenings.

''Underage drinkers are not only taking risks by breaking the law but they should also be aware that alcohol can leave them vulnerable and put their personal safety at risk.

"We have increased our patrols in order to address the community's concerns and we will take action against those involved in this type of behaviour including issuing anti-social behaviour referrals.

''The park is an alcohol-free zone, covered under the public space protection order, and anyone found drinking alcohol will have their drink confiscated and be instructed to leave the area.

"Any adults who are found to be buying alcohol for under 18s can be fined £80 and also risk further prosecution by the courts. I would urge residents to keep reporting concerns of anti-social behaviour to us so that we can act upon them."
