Barry-based personal trainer and Mind in the Vale ambassador Austin Thomas recently took part in the grueling 4x4x48 David Goggins challenge, raising an incredible £4,108.

The challenge saw people all over the world getting involved by running 4 miles, every 4 hours for 48 hours.

With mental health being a cause close to Coach Austin's heart, he chose to raise money for his local mental health charity, Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Austin commented: "During lockdown, people's mental health has been affected.

"I myself have faced problems with my mental health and seeking professional help for OCD has been rewarding.

"It's been a long journey but I have learnt a lot and empowered myself.

"Having a routine every day and exercising is the most important thing for mental health.

"Exercising releases all the feel good neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine.

"You're stimulating your mind whilst exercising and I believe this is the key to dealing with mental health.

"It hasn't got to be running miles or pounding the weights, it can be going for walks or anything that gets the body moving."

Austin sadly lost friends to suicide and is keen to continue to support Mind in the Vale by joining and helping to promote the recent suicide prevention campaign #ItTakeBallsToTalk, which encourages men to talk and access support with their mental health.

The campaign will also offer suicide prevention training and mental health awareness training to local sports clubs, businesses and individuals involved.

Mind in the Vale says it is very grateful to Austin for choosing to support his local mental health charity in his incredible challenge and for the many businesses and individuals that donated.

"The pandemic is causing many of us to struggle with our mental health, it's really important to access support if you need it. If you are struggling with your mental health and need to access support or get in touch."
