Off-duty Coastguard officers step in to help man knocked from motorcycle

Local News by Ellyn Wright 22nd Mar 2021

Two of Barry's volunteer Coastguard officers went above and beyond their duties last week to help a young man knocked from his motorcycle on Gladstone Road.

Haydn Chatwell was travelling along Gladstone Road when he saw the incident take place. He rang deputy station manager Russell Fowler who luckily lives just a few streets away.

Russell owns First Aid Supplies and Training Wales, also on Gladstone Road, and was able to attend the scene with a medical kit.

Together using their training, they stabilised the casualty who suffered an injury to his lower leg, stopping some minor bleeding, until the ambulance arrived.

Station manager Chris Fletcher praised the two volunteers for their actions.

"We don't deal with road traffic collisions as the Coastguard, but it was lovely that they stopped and put their skills into practise," Chris told Nub News.

"They weren't just being Coastguards, they helped when people in the community needed them.

"It was a case of right time right place that Haydn was travelling on the road at the same time," he said.
