A fire that broke out in the early hours of this morning at the Waterfront is suspected to have been caused accidently.

Residents described hearing loud bangs as the flames broke out and engulfed the lower repair garage and valeting area of Howe Motors on Hood Road.

Kymberley Paskell, who lives nearby, said "it got pretty scary at one point".

"At first all I heard was what I thought was kids playing with explosives on the old train tracks," Kymberley told Nub News.

"It wasn't until my neighbour told me to look out the front of the house we saw the huge flames coming from across the way.

"It can't be more than 100/200yards from us on Mariners Walk.

"The fire brigade was there pretty promptly; we could feel the ash and damp air falling on us stood at the front of our houses.

"It got pretty scary at one point when it seemed like the bushes separating us had caught alight, but they had the fire under control."

A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue said: "At approximately 12:48am on Wednesday the 26th of May, we received reports of a fire in The Waterfront, Barry.

"Multiple crews attended the scene and used specialist equipment to extinguish the fire. There were no reported casualties.

"The incident concluded at approximately 4:06am and the supposed cause has been suspected to be accidental."
