New footbridge and lifts set to be built at Barry Station
Work to upgrade Barry station is set to begin later this month.
From 29 July, construction of a new footbridge and lifts will commence, according to Network Rail.
These improvements at Barry station are funded by the Department for Transport and Welsh Government through the Access for All programme.
The £3.3m project will mean platforms 2 and 3 will be fully accessible for the first time.
"Accessibility benefits everyone. It also promotes the use of the rail network and allows for fewer car journeys, less congestion and carbon emissions," said a spokesperson for Network Rail.
"We have already carried out some work at the station, installing tactile paving on platforms and widening platform 2 as part of the re-opening of platform 3.
"The work leads on from the recently completed Access for All scheme at Cadoxton station and takes the network one step closer to a fully accessible line between Barry Island and Cardiff Central."
As part of the work, Network Rail will fence off an area of the car park to store materials and machinery.
Workers will be on site for the rest of the year, and the project is due to be completed by summer 2022.
Barry MS Jane Hutt welcomed the upgrades.
"It is wonderful that work is going to begin shortly, with a new bridge and lifts - the improvements are due to be finished by next summer," said Ms Hutt via social media.
"Improving access at stations is vital and I welcome this positive response to my calls for an accessible replacement bridge at this busy station in Barry."
During this time, the station will remain open to passengers, with the construction hours due to be confirmed to Nub News next week.
Network Rail is holding a drop-in session at Barry station on Tuesday 20 July between 3-6.30pm. The Network Rail project team and contractors Centregreat will be on hand to answer questions.
