The Barry Coastguard team were joined by Penarth Coastguard for an early start on Saturday Morning as they were tasked to rescue a female stuck in the mud at Barry's Old Harbour.

The casualty was extracted from the mud by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and handed over to Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust for transport to University Hospital of Wales.

Nub News contacted the fire service for details on the rescue.

A spokesperson said: ''At approximately 3:00am on Sunday 17th November 2019 we received reports of a concern for a person's safety on Harbour Road, Barry.

''Crews from Barry, Ely, and Malpas attended the scene and a rescue was undertaken.

''A stop message was received at 3:35am.''

The coastguards official safety advice for mud is:

''Walking over (and through) mud is difficult and tiring and there can be hidden channels of fast-flowing water.

''You can get trapped in the mud, which is frightening at the best of times but potentially fatal if the tide comes in.

If you get stuck in mud or quicksand:

• Avoid moving and stay as calm as you can discourage other people from attempting to rescue you, since without the proper equipment they could become stuck too.

• If you have a mobile phone call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

• If you don't, shout for help.
