Lounge restaurant to be built at Nell's Point toilet block, chain boss confirms

By Ellyn Wright 4th Feb 2021

The founder of the Loungers group Alex Reilley says they will be opening a new restaurant on Barry Island in 2022, as part of the Nell's Point redevelopment.

The restaurant chain has over 160 Lounge restaurants and Cosy Clubs in the UK.

Mr Reilley tweeted a picture of the Grade II-listed building yesterday evening. The caption read:

"A Grade II listed toilet block in Barry Island I hear you say. Oh go on then."

In the replies to his Tweet, Mr Reilley confirmed the plan was to turn the former toilet block into a Lounge restaurant, similar to the Ocho Lounge in Penarth or Juno Lounge in Roath, Cardiff.

The Nell's Point project is being developed by James Morse, who was behind the Oyster Wharf scheme in Mumbles, and would see the building transformed into four commercial units with outdoor seating space.

Morse Affiliated submitted the plans in 2019. Mr Morse had hoped the scheme would be completed in 2021, but Covid and the structural stability of the building have caused delays.

The toilet block was built in 1923 but has not been used for used for a "significant number" of years, which has led the building to become dilapidated.

One Twitter user wrote: "Sounds great. It was a beautiful building in its time.

"It would be lovely to see some Barry and Barry Island history incorporated into the design. Barry and Barry Island are so much more than Gavin and Stacey."

In response to a tweet reading "will be a nice terrace", Mr Reilley replied "very nice".
