High Street Pharmacy, in Barry, has announced that they will be providing a service to help treat customers sore throats without residents needing to visit the GP.

Announcing their new service on social media, they said: ''We have a great new NHS service to treat sore throats.

''We will assess, check temperatures, and if applicable take a throat swab to check for the presence of Strep A bacteria.

''If the swab is positive we will then issue a course of Antibiotics without the need to visit your GP surgery.''

The service is available for anyone over the age of 6.

Normally, there is no appointment needed but due to the new nature of the service, only one of the pharmacists is currently trained. Customers should check that they are available before visiting.

With strains on the NHS reaching breaking point across the country, new approaches like this will be welcomed by the community and health board.
