People in Barry are preparing to commemorate those lost in the past year tomorrow, on the anniversary of the first lockdown began.

The Cenotaph, Western Shelter, and Town Hall will be lit yellow, and there will be moments of silence at 12 noon and 9pm.

The campaign to 'light up Wales' has been organised by the Facebook support group Covid-19 Families Wales, which offers comfort and solidarity to those who have been bereaved.

Barry resident Lisa Churchill joined the group after her father David passed away.

"I'd seen the group on a TV news report," Lisa told Nub News.

"My dad was admitted to hospital in the beginning of January, just with a leg infection. He did a Covid test that came back negative.

"He was there for about a week, and then we got a call that he had deteriorated over night.

"They had to give him oxygen and his temperature was really high. Somebody tested positive in the bay next to him, so he had another test and it came back positive.

"He was in hospital for about three and a half weeks, and he was getting better and better. He came off the oxygen, he seemed fine.

"But then he just caught infection after infection and had pneumonia.

"It wasn't easy to get through to the hospital. We had a call from them on the Thursday and they weren't sure he was going to make it.

"We got another call on Saturday saying it was time to come and see him. We were told we'd be in a private room, but there was no room available.

"So, there were other people in the ward, and we just had the curtain pulled across. It wasn't very private.

"They removed his oxygen and he was highly sedated when we got there. His breathing was so bad, it was really distressing.

"Then he died two hours after we left the hospital."

After such a difficult loss, the support group has helped Lisa pay tribute to her dad.

"Sometimes you look at posts and you hear sad stories which can be overwhelming, but it has been a really good support," said Lisa.

"There's people making different decorations to display in windows in remembrance.

"Everyone seems really supportive."

The group has also organised for photos of loved ones who have passed away this year to be displayed on television and projected onto the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.

'Light Up Wales' is being held in conjuction with the Marie Curie Day of Reflection.
