The Vale of Glamorgan Council will be hosting two drop-in sessions offering minor repairs and safety checks to bikes as part of National Bike Week.

Cyclists can bring their bikes to Cosmeston Country Park between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday or Barry Island between 2pm and 5pm for the free service, carried out by DR Bike.

This is part of the Council's commitment to health and wellbeing for residents and its drive to encourage more environmentally friendly behaviours.

Last year saw the launch of Project Zero, a pledge to completely eliminate the Council's carbon emissions by 2030.

There are a range of cycle routes available across the Vale, including networks around Barry, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys, Llantwit Major, Penarth, Rhoose, St Athan and Sully.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said: "Bike Week is a great opportunity to dust off that old bike and take it out for a spin. There are a range of activities available for people to enjoy over the seven days.

"Cycling is not only beneficial for physical and mental health, it is also good for the planet.

"As a Council, we are committed to lowering carbon emissions over the coming years and swapping your car for a bike when taking certain trips is a simple way to achieve that."

Studies suggest people who cycle regularly in adulthood enjoy a level of fitness equivalent to someone 10 years younger.

Delivered each year by Cycling UK, Bike Week encourages a quarter of a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling to get around.

This year there are a range of events across the seven days, including the World's Biggest Bike Ride and opportunities to learn new skills or try a new challenge.

On Sunday, the World's Biggest Bike Ride aims to get as many people as possible on their bikes on the same day.

The ride can cover any distance, take place any time and involve any type of cycling.
