In previous years, Barry Town Council has celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight with Tea and coffee mornings, but due to the pandemic and currently being in lockdown, it decided to approach it in a different way.

Fairtrade Fortnight, which lasts from 22 February to 7 March, is an opportunity to highlight fair trade products, which can include bananas, coffee and chocolate, this year discussing the impact of climate change upon farmers.

Barry Town Council is running a Facebook takeover: over the fortnight it will be putting up lots of posts including information on what Fairtrade is and how it helps workers.

It was also be showing how the public can help and buy Fairtrade, what products are in the Fairtrade repertoire, along with quizzes, competitions and questions and ideas of how you can include children with activities including Fairtrade products. Fairtrade Barry will be hosting an online 'fun Fairtrade quiz' to mark this year's Fairtrade Fortnight. The quiz will take place over Zoom on Friday, March 5th, with Cllr Nic Hodges as quizmaster.

To register for the quiz contact [email protected] before 4 March. There will be no entry charge, but donations of Fairtrade food and drink to the Vale Foodbank would be welcomed.

There is also a competition to be entered:

"Our choices are powerful. They can help shape the world we want. The daily decisions we make about what to eat, drink and wear affect the lives of people around the world – and the health of our planet. "WHAT DOES THE WORLD YOU WANT TO SEE LOOK LIKE? "Young people in the Vale of Glamorgan between the ages of 5 and 25 are invited to share their vision of the world they want for farmers and workers worldwide, and the planet we all live on. "Share your artwork, poem, prose or film, for a chance to win prizes for yourself and for your school or college. Email [email protected] with your vision to be entered into the Vale of Glamorgan Fairtrade competition. "Please state your name, age and town where you live (and school if applicable) in the email. All entrants must live or study in the Vale of Glamorgan. Submit your vision by 1 March 2021. "Top tips for your vision piece:
  • If an image, try to take a clear photo in natural lighting.
  • Try to fill the whole frame with your artwork.
  • If a video, it must be shot in landscape, not portrait, and shared with us via a link to the video on YouTube or Vimeo.
  • If you have written a poem or prose, please keep it to a maximum of one side of A4 and share electronically as an email, Word document or PDF.
  • Remember to get consent from a parent or guardian.

"There are prizes for junior, senior and 18+ winners and their educational institution if declared.

"By submitting your piece, you consent to it being used in a future Vale Fairtrade exhibition before the end of 2022, and through social media or press, unless you note otherwise in the email.

"We will also share your entry with the Fairtrade Foundation Youth Exhibition for possible use at the "Choose the World You Want" festival between 22 February and 7 March 2021, unless you indicate otherwise in your email."
