The final flight from Portugal landed at Cardiff Airport yesterday before the amber travel deadline began at 4am this morning.
Landing at 11.01am yesterday (Monday 7 June), the Ryanair journey from Faro was the final flight back to Wales before the cut-off.
The Government says the decision to remove Portugal from the Green list is based on increasing concern about the spread of Coronavirus variants including the Delta (Indian) variant.
Many travellers rearranged their travel plans in order to return to the UK before the deadline.
People are advised not to travel to amber destinations; those who do must take a Covid-19 test before departure and have proof of a negative result, book a Covid-19 test on days two and eight after return, complete a passenger locator form and quarantine for 10 days.
Seven other countries – including Sri Lanka and Egypt Afghanistan, Sudan, Bahrain, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica – have also been added to the red list with effect from the same day.
The Department for Transport said: "The situation in Portugal has required swift action to protect the gains made with the vaccine rollout – there has been an almost doubling in the COVID-19 test positivity rate in Portugal since the first review for traffic light allocations."
Wales' Health Minister, Eluned Morgan said: "Our message is clear – this is the year to holiday at home.
"We're calling on people to only travel overseas for essential reasons. We have all sacrificed so much to control the pandemic in Wales, we do not want to see the virus re-imported – or new variants come into the country - as a result of overseas travel."
