A scheme has been submitted to build a residential development of 23 affordable homes in Barry.

Pegasus Developments has earmarked land on Hayes Road for the proposed new properties.

A document to Vale of Glamorgan Council states that the company's intention is to 'provide a high-quality affordable residential development which would meet the needs of local people'.

It goes on: "The vision for the land is to develop this site, for the delivery of 100% affordable housing to assist in meeting the affordable housing need within the Vale of Glamorgan.

"The proposals seek to develop the site sympathetically to ensure that the development will contribute positively to the surrounding area both in the short term and for future generations.

"The...proposed layout aims to provide a distinctive sense of place for occupants and visitors by acknowledging and complementing the site's opportunities and constraints.

"The design of the dwellings has considered the surrounding built context, taking cues from the nearby residential and industrial buildings, ensuring that the development will compliment and enhance the character of the area."

Pegasus Development's plan is to build 19 two-bedroom (3 person capacity) and four three-bedroom (5 person capacity) houses and create 55 parking spaces.

The site has been previously developed for employment use during the mid 1970s, but is now cleared and back to its natural state.

While residential land dominates Hayes Road and nearby Bendrick Road, the site lies just beyond the settlement boundary as defined by the Local Development Plan Proposals Map.

"It is important to acknowledge this whilst ensuring that what is proposed is sensitive to, and in-keeping with, surrounding, established land uses," adds the document.

The council is awaiting consultation responses before making a decision on the full planning application.
