The prosecution case in the trial of seven people accused of murdering 17-year-old Harry Baker in Barry closed yesterday.

Leon Clifford, 23, Raymond Thompson, 48, Ryan Palmer, 34, Lewis Evans, 62, and Peter McCarthy, 37, who are all from Barry, as well as Leon Symons, 22, from Ely, in Cardiff, and a 17-year-old boy from Cardiff all deny murder and are on trial at Newport Crown Court.

Mr Clifford entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on 24 February 2020.

The victim was found in Barry Intermodal Terminal on 28 August 2019, bloodied and covered in stab wounds. It is alleged that he was killed in a drug dealing row, and that a group chased him for over a mile.

When opening the case four weeks ago, prosecutor Paul Lewis QC told the jury that the prosecution's case is that Harry Baker was targeted as a victim, hunted down, and ambushed.

Mr Lewis said Harry Baker was initially attacked on Little Moors Hill, and was chased for roughly a mile before climbing a fence.

He said that the victim sought refuge in the docks compound, thinking he would be safe. Mr Lewis described his killers as determined, and subjecting Harry to a "merciless" attack.

During its case, the prosecution said that the victim's phone was taken by the defendants after the attack.

Mr Lewis said Mr Symons had laughed on the phone to the person that had called Harry.

Another call was made after the stabbing from Harry's phone to a woman he was staying with at the time. The caller, who had tried to disguise his voice is reported to have said she would not be hearing from Harry again.

A transcript of rap lyrics written in a notebook by Leon Symons, which was found in his police cell, was read to the court by DC Mark Glover. This included the words: "We left HB for dead".

The six-week trial, before Mr Justice Picken, continues.
