The Vale of Glamorgan Council has approved proposals for a new mixed-use development at the west end of Barry town centre.

The Council plans to redevelop two key locations in the centre of Barry.

The Gladstone Bridge Compound Site could become home to a new medical centre, replacing the existing Broad Street Clinic, as well as apartments reserved for older people similar to the nearby Golau Caredig extra care facility.

The current Broad Street Clinic will then be redeveloped into a block of affordable apartments that will have no age criteria but will provide new homes for local families.

Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration, said: "These proposals have the potential to transform the west end of Barry town centre.

"We have already seen the impact the Golau Caredig development has had not just on the lives of those people living in the apartments but the feel of that part of the town.

"These proposals aim to build on this while also delivering a new modern health centre and much needed affordable housing. The housing element will provide accommodation for people in the heart of the community, close to local shops and other facilities, and with excellent public transport links.

"As with all of our regeneration projects this scheme will see an emphasis on high quality design and a strong sense of place, and of course this will be developed in consultation with the local community."

Both elements of the scheme are subject to planning permission and project funding. The Council is working closely with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and with Welsh Government.
