An application has been submitted to replace the old Barry and District News building on Holton Road with a commercial shop unit and five flats.

156 Holton Road was formerly the headquarters for the Barry and District Newspaper alongside the Penarth times for many years.

The papers have since moved to Newport and so the site has been left vacant.

The application states that the property is situation is ''in an established District Centre that is in need of rejuvenation.

''The applicant sees this an opportunity to contribute to rejuvenation and to create a development that will both see a decent return for him and provide a vehicle that makes a large contribution to the regeneration of the area.''

The applicant has created plans to ''sympathise with the existing character and design of the property.''

They have also touched on the privacy of neighbouring buildings and have located windows to ''avoid loss of privacy''.

Parking has not been included in the design but it focuses on the local transport links available and bicycle parking which will be available to residents of the flats.

The apartments would be built into the existing site utilising the building as it stands.

The application states that the ''fabric and the main construction of the building is fair but requires upgrading. It is considered that the building is suitable for the conversions and alteration envisaged by the client.''

The application will be considered by a planning officer for the Vale before a decision is made.
