Christmas lights go up on Holton Road

By Ellyn Wright 27th Oct 2020

Christmas lights have been put up on Holton Road, Barry.

David Elliott, chairman of the Holton Road Traders Association said he was "really pleased" that Barry Town Council has put up the lights, which will "spread some Christmas cheer in the community".

"This year hasn't given us much to be happy about, including right now, with us being in lockdown. Many shops are closed, unable to sell and it's a hard time to be a trader," said David.

"This time last year, we celebrated Pumpkins in the Park and we were planning for a huge Christmas event with Vale of Glamorgan Council but 2020 has taken away those possibilities.

"It is the 'little things' in life that help us smile and be a little more positive. Seeing the festive lighting being re-installed along Holton Road is such a great thing to see," he said.

Some shops along Holton Road are still open as essential retailers and offer in-store purchases, delivery and online shopping.

"Please take a moment to research your local shops, see if they have a social media page or website and help keep your local high streets going," said David.

Last year the lights were switched on by Gavin and Stacey star and writer Ruth Jones, in character as Vanessa Shanessa Jenkins.

Approximately 7000 people came to see Nessa at the celebration last November, an event that is sure to be drastically different this year due to Coronavirus restrictions.
