The Vale of Glamorgan Council hosted a week of events at Rondel House Day Service to mark Carers Week 2019.

Rondel House, situated in Maes Y Cwm street Barry, supports elderly people across the Vale of Glamorgan.

Carers Week is an annual campaign that raises awareness for carers, highlighting the challenges that unpaid carers face and recognising the sacrifices they make for families and communities throughout the UK.

Singers and guitarists stopped by to perform classics from the 40's, 50's and 60's for the older

Upon hearing the familiar tunes, users got involved – singing, clapping and dancing.

Buds 'n' Blooms Tiny Tots Play, a scheme which sees children under 5 meet with the older people, took place midweek.

The service also hosted a Cupcake Fundraising Sale, raising £66.19 for Alzheimers Society.

Rondel House provides a lifeline for many elderly people, namely those who suffer with age related frailty, chronic illness, disability or mental health problems, including Dementia.

It gives families and spouses some respite, as well as providing stimulation in a social setting for the service users.

Many of the older people using the service also suffer from depression or anxiety, leading to feelings of isolation.

Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health, Cllr Ben Gray said: "Carer's week is an important opportunity to focus on the vital and often unpaid work carried out by carers within our community.

"The events held at Rondel House not only offer respite to those with caring responsibilities, but also serve to highlight the huge contribution carers make and the significant challenges they face.

"Rondel House has a lovely warm and inviting atmosphere. Staff are energetic and caring.

''You wouldn't know that the older people there are suffering with these conditions, as they really come out of their shell.

"Part of the reason for hosting these events is to raise awareness of the day service.

''Most people don't know it's there until they or a family member need it, yet it provides so much support to those who use it."
