Cadets complete 12-hour charity challenge

Local News by Ellyn Wright 18th Nov 2020

The Barry-based Cadets undertook a marathon challenge.

Cardiff and Vale College's Community Cadet Force have raised money for the Royal British Legion by completing a 12-hour relay.

The CAVC Cadets, who are based at the college's Barry campus, undertook a marathon challenge on 11 November.

Starting at 7:30am, in teams of three the cadets and staff completed a 30-minute Tactical Advance into Battle around Cardiff International Sports Campus stadium in full patrol order kit. They carried all the supplies needed for the next 12 hours.

After each half hour, the "TAB" team swapped over with the next, and rested until their next shift. The challenge ended at 7:30pm.

"We all know the buzz words of courage, discipline, respect, integrity, loyalty and service before self – but how many of us could actually say that we as young adults displayed said values when faced with a challenging task?," wrote Contingent Commander Second Lieutenant Tom Jones in a social media post.

"The Cadets of CAVC's CCF put their money, where their mouth was and committed themselves to cause that was far bigger than any of them.

"Professionally executing their fundraising challenge as advocates of both the College and the Cadet movement – proving their worth as exemplary citizens of tomorrow.

"This started in the dark, and finished in the dark. The Cadets went through sun, wind and rain – but never stopped, never moaned and never complained!

"Left foot, right foot the miles rolled by and the tally carried on. Each Cadet and member of staff stuck to the challenge without hesitating – they were privileged to be contributing to this fantastic charity; knowing full well that hundreds and thousands of people are unable to due to the pandemic."

In the evening, as a mark of respect and passage the Cadets were presented with their cap badges from our Army Sponsor Unit – 157 (Welsh) Regiment – Royal Logistic Corps, which spurred them on in the final hours.

After 12 hours, the cadets had covered 275km, equivalent of travelling from Cardiff to Wrexham.

"The last team crossed the line; tired, wet, hungry, aching and proud – knowing that they gave something back to someone who gave it all," wrote 2Lt Jones.

So far the cadets have raised £461, almost doubling their £250 target. The just giving link is still open to receive donations: [L] https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cavcccfpopp
