St Helen's Catholic Infant School in Barry has closed to pupils today as the pressure of coronavirus on staffing levels has taken its toll. This is the first school closure in Barry caused by the virus.

They updated parents in an open letter yesterday.

It said: ''After a great deal of consideration with regards to health and safety of pupils and staff, I am writing to inform you that from Wednesday 18th of March, we are left with no option but to close our Foundation Phase Site (Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) until further notice.

''This is due to the fact that many of our staff – teaching and non-teaching – fall into the categories highlighted in the UK Government's current 'Guidance on Social Distancing for Everyone in the UK and Protecting Older People and Vulnerable Adults.'

''This decision has not been taken lightly, but despite looking at a range of alternative models, we had to put the following measures in place.

''We ask that all Foundation Phase children remain at home, with the exception of those whose parents and guardians are genuinely unable to make other arrangements. These children may be brought to KS2 at 9:15 am.

''In particular, in keeping within the spirit of Government intentions for schools to remain open at this time, we will welcome the children of NHS staff, care home staff, along with children who are in receipt of Free School Meals and the children of teachers from St Helen's and other schools.

''If your child receives Free School Meals but they are not in school because they are self-isolating, they can still receive a packed lunch.''
