Six Barry surfing athletes are chosen to represent Wales' youth team in the national Surf Life Saving competition.

This year a number of athletes have been selected from clubs in Barry and the surrounding areas.

Vale Surf Life Saving Club members selected were: Kelsea Peterson, Rueben Hopkin, Brooke Peterson,

Rhoose lifeguard club also had 3 of their members selected: Finlay Sullivan, Ethan Wall, Evie Wong.

The Welsh youth and open surf lifesaving team 2019 will be made of six males and six females.

The team will compete against the England surf lifesaving team in Perrenporth, Cornwall on August 10th.

It will be a challenging competition, especially with Perrenporth's heavy surf. It is known for its waves reaching over 4 ft in height.

They will compete in a number of surf lifesaving disciplines in the water such as a swim, board and ski (like a kayak).

The team also have to prove themselves on the sand with events such as the 90m beach sprint and beach flags.

There are also a number of team events such as a taplin relay which consist of 4 members; one swimmer, a board paddler, ski paddler and a runner.

Last year England won both the youth and open category by a slim 10 points.

Wales will be looking to fight back as the team travel over the bridge for the competition.
