Barry Town Utd Under 16 Girls came out on top in a thrilling FAW Cup Final on Sunday with a 4-3 victory against North Wales outfit Penryhn Bay played at Latham Park Newtown.

The U16 FAW Girls Cup competition was the only national cup competition to be completed during the 2020-21 season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic with the competition only returning in April once Under 18 football was able to resume.

Barry, who reached the final following victories over Llantwit Fardre, Johnstown and Caerleon, went into the match in good from but also mindful of the threat posed by their North Wales opponents.

Both teams have a number of players involved in the Welsh international setup and a close encounter was always to be expected and the game did not disappoint.

The Dragons started well and took an early lead through a great move finished off by the in-form Manon Pearce, who calmly finished to make it 1-0 to Barry in the opening minutes.

Soon later they doubled their lead with Captain Gwenno Goode converting from close range to put Barry in command early on.

Penrhyn bounced back and started to put some pressure on the Barry goal and reduced the deficit just before half time with a fantastic free kick taken by Sophie Rawling to make it 2-1 to Barry at the half time break.

Early into the second half, Penrhyn got themselves on level terms when Rawlings struck a shot from distance which went under the Barry goalkeeper in treacherous conditions to level the match up at 2-2.

Barry didn't drop their heads having surrendered a two goal lead and mid-way through the second half, scored two goals in quick succession to take control of the game.

First substitute Gina Robinson found space down the right and cut inside before finishing well into the corner and Pearce finished off a great counter attack to put Barry 4-2 up.

Both sets of players were putting in a huge shift in very wet conditions and Penryhn did manage to grab a late consolation goal in the final minute, Rawlings netting once again from a free-kick to record a hat-trick.

Barry however held on to win the match 4-3 and claim the U16 Faw Cup title for a second time in their history following victory in 2018.

The teams should be commended for putting on a fantastic game of football and showcasing the excellent standard of talent in the girl's game in Wales.
