Barry Town United football club has joined organisations across the sporting world in a 'social media blackout' this weekend.

The blackout is in protest of discriminatory abuse that's prevalent in online social media spaces.

The protest hopes to highlight the need for social media companies to strengthen their policies and actions in tackling hatred online.

A statement from the team read:

"We at Barry Town United stand with all other JD Cymru Premier clubs, the Football Association of Wales and the wider football community in taking part in a boycott of all social media platforms over the coming days.

"The increased level of online abuse directed at players and those involved with the game in recent months is disgusting and unacceptable. Something must be done to stop the spread of hatred and discrimination.

"Between 15:00 on Friday 30 April and 23:59 on Monday 3 May, we will fall silent on social media to show solidarity in this coordinated fight against online abuse. We hope this sparks a conversation and triggers real change.

"While we appreciate the importance of social media in a time where supporters are sadly not allowed in stadiums, we feel it is important to take this stand, show our support and send a clear message.

"Enough is enough."
