Barry scaffolders begin 24-hour row for charity
CASS Supplies, the Barry-based bespoke scaffolding solutions company, have commenced their non-stop 24 hour row for charity.
Roughly 40 members of staff, family members, friends, clients, ex-employees and even employees of a neighbouring scaffolding company will row successive 30 minute slots until noon tomorrow.
The challenge is taking place in the gym adjoining the company's Atlantic Business Park unit. All COVID regulations are being strictly adhered to.
Ten employees of the construction group Morgan Sindall will take part tomorrow morning.
Nine rowers have already completed their sessions, the first of which started at noon today. They have already rowed almost nine kilometres. Some "gym buff" CASS employees are taking on multiple sessions.
They are doing so to raise money for the charities InTouch and Cystic Fibrosis. The former supports Royal Navy Rugby League players as they adapt to civilian life. Cystic Fibrosis seeks to treat and eventually find cure for the debilitating disease.
Both are causes close to CASS' heart. CASS Managing Director Tom Gent is Vice-Chair of InTouch and served in the Royal Navy 1996 to 2003. While serving, he played both rugby league and union.
A close member of Tom's family suffers from cystic fibrosis, as does the son of one of CASS' closest clients and friends.
"We're eight rowers in at the moment and it's going really well," CASS team member Clair explained at 4pm. "We made the decision about three years ago to do some form of charity work.
"As a company, we do a lot of small sponsorships of local sports teams and stuff like that, but Tom said let's choose a charity every year and help them out."
The company has previously supported Wish Upon A Star and Trussell Trust and raised money for Barry foodbanks.
"We want to give back. We don't just want to be a scaffolding company. We want to show that there's more to us. It's not just about selling to big clients and doing big jobs. There's another side to us, a side that wants to help people and cares about the community."
