A Barry man has been jailed for more than eight years after being convicted of rape and other offences.

Daniel Taylor denied the charges against him but was convicted by a jury for rape, two counts of sexual assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and battery.

Taylor, 39, was sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to eight years and nine months this morning.

Detective Constable Gillon Neal, officer in the case, praised the courage of the victim – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – for reporting Taylor's crimes and supporting the prosecution.

DC Neal said: "Coming forward to report such crimes is extremely difficult, but I hope cases such as this demonstrate to those who have suffered or are continuing to suffer sexual abuse, that there is specialist support available.

"Our Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) unit has specially trained officers who can be trusted to fully and sensitively investigate such allegations.

''Anyone who comes forward can be assured that they will be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.

"We also work closely with partner agencies who are able to provide guidance and support throughout the whole process."

Sexual abuse can be reported via 101, or to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Alternatively, help, advice and support can be sought from Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC). Click the red button below.
