Barry's Coastguard team had to locate missing children four times on the Island yesterday, as the hot weather saw thousands of visitors flock to the beaches.

On Monday, the Coastguard assisted with a medical emergency near Friars Point, as an "intoxicated woman" was stretchered to hospital.

Station manager Chris Fletcher advised parents about keeping their children safe in busy public areas.

"If parents are taking young children to a beach or a park or anywhere like that, we ask that they take a photo of them when they arrive," he said.

"Then they can show us an actual picture if they were to go missing.

"Quite often parents forget what colour shorts their child are wearing and trying to pinpoint them on a massive scale can be difficult.

"Whereas if we have an exact picture and exact description, it will make a huge difference to our finding time.

"The lifeguards are primarily there to maintain water safety. So that's why we get tasked to provide the search skills to try and locate missing children or they're missing parents."

This week is National Volunteers Week, celebrating the people who give up their time to help their communities.

All Barry Coastguard officers are volunteers.

"We really appreciate that all the time that people give back to help others moment's notice," said Chris.
