Cadfield Van, the community project tackling local hunger and food waste, has expanded to Holton.

Between noon and 2pm on Wednesdays, the food van now visits Dock View Road, Brook Street, Merganser Court and Holton Road.

The expansion comes just two months after the project began.

Barry residents pay £4 to fill a bag with food items provided by the charity FareShare, who redistribute surplus food to worthy causes.

The scheme is led by Oakfield and Cadoxton primary schools. After the success of Big Bocs Initiative, teachers began to consider ways to widen the project's scope.

They were approached by Mike Mitchell, Managing Director, of the Barry-based road freight company United Worldwide Logistics (UWL). He offered to purchase a van that would travel around Barry providing cheap food to those in need.

UWL also covers the running costs of the van. The company's UK planning manager Rhys Davies is part of the volunteer team who operate it.

"There's clearly a need for it here," he told Nub News on the first day of the van's expansion to Holton.

"It's a lot busier than expected and it's growing by the week. The long term plan is to have a van every day.

"Some people rely on us and don't have enough money for food. I break down every week hearing the stories, but that's what we're here for."

Hannah Cogbill is a teacher at Cadoxton. Alongside Oak Field teacher Nicole Cox-Schembri, she has played a pivotal role in getting the project up and running.

She explained why the van has proved so popular and why it is so important.

"It's basically just making sure that basic needs are met and actually giving families the opportunity to find joy and happiness in other things," she told us. "The basic need of food gives children the opportunity to thrive.

"What we're doing shows the Barry community spirit. We're all in this together."

A large queue gathered on the van's inaugural visit to Holton. Kate Jenkins, a parent at Holton Primary School, was part of it.

"For this amazing school to organise it is amazing. I'm on zero hours, so this takes a massive relief off your head," she told us.

"It's beautiful in there. I just want to say thank you to the school and to everyone who organised it."

Cadfield Van continues to visit six other locations in Barry every Saturday. The scheme is open to the entire community. Users do not have to be parents at the three schools.
