The Vale Homes (Community Investment team) in partnership with Pedal Power and the Active Travel team have set up the return of Bike Club for 2023.

Thanks to funding from the Shared Prosperity Funding the Bike club is running for children from the age of 6 – 10 years old.

Pedal Power will run the free of charge cycling sessions for children every Tuesday at Ty Iolo play area from 4.00pm – 5.30pm. The first session will take place on Tuesday 13th June.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said: "I am delighted to welcome the return of the Barry Bike Club at Ty Iolo.

"Learning to ride a bike is a lifelong skill and children can enjoy the physical and mental health benefits associated with this type of exercise.

"The scheme aligns with our Project Zero pledge to reduce our carbon emissions to net zero by 2030 and will hopefully encourage more children to use active travel methods."

There will be two elements to Bike Club. One will be learning to ride and the second will be a confident riding session.

The aims of Bike Club include:

  • Introduction to children into cycling
  • Teaching safe starting and stopping.
  • Teaching effective and safe signalling.
  • Practicing turns using cones.
  • Having fun in a safe and friendly environment.
Mark Ellis, a Community Investment and Involvement Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council said: "Having been involved in this project previously I am delighted to see Barry Bike Club return after a four-year break. I am looking forward to seeing local children given the opportunity to use the new bikes that have been purchased at the club."
